MILWAUKEE – A massive overhaul of I-794 in downtown Milwaukee is well underway.

Construction crews will shut down the highway Thursday night to mark new lanes for eastbound and westbound traffic.

Crews already demolished one half of the roadway near Milwaukee Public Market.

"We're going to demolish as much as we can, as fast as we can,” explained Carolynn Gellings, the project’s manager.

"[Crews are] working doubles. They’re working through pretty much all weather except that cold streak to get everything done. The structures, the demo is definitely moving along.”

The work, which can be quite noisy, will continue through the night.

Folks who live and shop in the Third Ward are also battling parking problems. Debris now blocks a well-used parking lot beneath I-794.

"We know it's not easy for folks, but we're doing our best to work as fast as we can to expedite the work,” Gellings explained.

Construction is expected to take place well into 2015.
