Man, 68, dies after falling through ice in NW Wis.
TOWN OF DELTA, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities in northwestern Wisconsin say a 68-year-old man has died after falling through the ice while on his way to fish with a friend.
The Bayfield County sheriff's office says rescuers responded to a 911 call about a person through the ice of Basswood Lake in the Town of Delta Thursday morning.
The caller said he and his friend were trying to get onto the lake to go fishing when his friend, who was ahead of him, broke through the ice.
The caller wasn't able to get his friend out of the water. Rescuers pulled the man from the water but he was dead.
Authorities say the man apparently was crossing over a channel in the lake with an active current below. The victim's name was not released.
