MILWAUKEE -- Major traffic changes will be starting at General Mitchell International Airport on Tuesday.

A massive renovation project -- to fix the airport's baggage claim area -- will affect passengers being picked up by friends or family.

The roadway by the baggage claim will be closed to all vehicles except shuttles and buses.

To avoid delays, travelers being picked up in a vehicle should meet in the hourly parking lot rather than the baggage claim curb. The first hour of parking is free.

“The shared baggage claim/ticketing roadway will be congested. Circling around the airport roadways while waiting for arriving passengers will be frustrating for drivers,” Interim Airport Director Terry Blue said in a release. “Our best advice is to use hourly parking instead. It is much easier, and you won’t run the risk of receiving a parking violation.”

The renovation project is expected to last until summer 2015.
