MCSO bomb squad detonates two live grenades in Oak Creek
OAK CREEK -- A woman doing some spring cleaning in the attic of her Oak Creek home stumbled upon a box of military mementos her late husband had stashed there.
Inside were four grenades, including a smoke grenade and a hand grenade.
Oak Creek police called the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office bomb squad , who detonated the devices late Tuesday night.
"Our officers looked at it, stepped away and said we need to get the experts in here to get it out of here," said Oak Creek police chief John Edwards.
Experts weren't sure if they were at all dangerous -- then the calls started rolling into the 911 center, asking what the explosions were all about.
"I know they were heard from miles away," Edwards said. "Some people had been told we had training exercises and they were upset we'd be doing training in the evening and I agree with them. We wouldn't be doing that."
Oak Creek resident Robert Sadowski said he appreciated the quick thinking of his neighbor calling authorities.
"I'm willing to bet they're items he had from World War II that probably got stacked up in an old military box that soldiers used to bring home with them when they came home from war," he said. "Im just happy that she talked to the proper authorities instead of throwing them in the garbage."
