MADISON - State consumer protection experts are warning bargain hunters about overcharges at American TV & Appliance's going-out-of-business sale.

State inspectors visited seven American stores on Monday. Out of 325 items that were checked, inspectors found 18 overcharges.
"We found an overcharge rate of 5.5%, which is about four times the average we see statewide," said Sandy Chalmers, administrator of the state Trade and Consumer Protection Division.
The charges themselves can be substantial.
"The amount overcharged ranged from about a dollar to more than $300."
The state recommends shoppers pay extra attention when checking out.
"We recommend they take the sticker or tag from the item with them to the register and carefully compare the sticker price to the price that rings up when they check out," said Chalmers.
