MILWAUKEE -- Diamonds were retailers' best friend this holiday season.

According to Mastercard's purchase data, jewelry was one of the most popular gifts purchased between Nov. 1 and Dec. 24.

Analysts say the stronger economy drove shoppers to jewelry.

Mastercard says shoppers spent an average of $500 to $1200 on jewelry, which is an increase over last year.

Overall, holiday spending was up in general.
