Janesville police identify body found near Rock River

JANESVILLE -- Janesville police have identified the body found near Rock River early Monday morning.

The victim has been identified as Britney Cross, 21, of Edgerton.

An initial autopsy shows Cross suffered a blunt impact head injury, according to Janesville Police Chief David Moore.

Police identified Clayton Courtney, a possible acquaintance or boyfriend of Cross, as a lone suspect in her death.

The investigation revealed that Cross and Courtney were together in the vicinity of Traxler Park/ Memorial Drive Bridge and 533 N. Main Street late aftenoon or early Sunday evening.

Courtney was arrested Sunday night after allegedly stabbing a man and telling several people that he had "already killed three people."

Officials said they have not determined a weapon, but have have confiscated items at the scene that could have been used.

A motive is unknown at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
