HARTFORD - It's been a rough stretch of days for Josh Odekirk. The Federal employee has been laid off since the beginning of October.

The Hartford man called TODAY'S TMJ4 to investigate after he said he was told by an employee at the Department of Workforce Development he wasn't eligible for state unemployment.

"I was told today that because we may be getting back paid, that they're holding all unemployment benefits." said Odekirk.

John Dipko with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development offered the following statement:

“The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development is committed to the prompt review and processing of any claim for Unemployment Insurance by employees who are out of work through no fault of their own.

We previously instructed Unemployment Insurance (UI) staff to process claims for federal government employees affected by the suspension of federal government operations, and to treat these claims as they would with any UI claim filed by a federal government employee.

Dipko insists benefits in Odekirk's case were not denied, but employees will be reminded laid off federal employees can file a claim.

Odekirk said he's just relieved he'll have some money coming in until the federal furlough is over. "I'd like to be working but short of that I need to have some income coming in."
