Former UWM student charged with homicide in uncle's heroin death

  • Tyler Schmidt is being charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the overdose death of his uncle.

MILWAUKEE - The former UW - Milwaukee student arrested last year after his uncle died of a heroin overdose in his dorm room will be charged with first-degree reckless homicide, according to a new criminal complaint.

20-year-old Tyler Schmidt was arrested last December after his uncle Timothy Stanczyk suffered a fatal heroin overdose in Schmidt's dorm room.

The complaint shows Schmidt and one other person purchased heroin near the Walgreens on North 35th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue the day of the incident.

Foil packets, a spoon, cotton balls, and a tourniquet were all found at the scene. 

If convicted of the charge, Schmidt could face up to a $100,000 fine as well as 40 years in prison.
