MILWAUKEE - Hundreds of flights headed for Chicago's two airports were diverted after a fire at an air traffic control center in Illinois.

Twenty flights made unscheduled landings at Mitchell International.

They remained on the ground until the problem was resolved several hours later.

Gary Tolle was on a Delta flight from Minneapolis to Chicago's O'Hare when the pilot said they had to land soon.

"He said we had enough fuel for a short holding pattern, the 45 minutes passed and they said we have to go to Milwaukee." Tolle said.

Some airlines put on passengers on buses, others held the flights in Milwaukee until flights resumed late Tuesday afternoon.
