Five in custody for East Side gunpoint robberies
MILWAUKEE - Five people are in custody for robbing pedestrians at gunpoint on Milwaukee’s East Side.
Three men and two young women are under arrest. The youngest suspect is a teenage girl.
Police say the aggressive crime team stole cell phones and cash.
“I’ve lived here my whole life,” said East Side resident Deven Patterson. “I feel safe, usually.”
In neighborhoods known for their nearby nightlife, police say the group of bandits went after people on foot just after the bars closed early Saturday morning. Investigators believe the group is responsible for three armed robberies in less than an hour.
“Thieves are targeting cell phones, cash, on occasion credit cards. Usually, it’s the quick disposable items that can be used at stores or sold for a profit,” said Capt. Aaron Raap of the Milwaukee Police Department. “Essentially, they just approached the victims while they were on foot and demanded valuables. They displayed what appeared to be a firearm.”
The victims are men and women. Two of the victims were walking alone.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case and plans to issue charges soon.
