Downtown Milwaukee 'deconstruction' project continues
MILWAUKEE -- The building is shrinking week by week.
Anybody working or walking downtown these days will probably see - and hear - massive construction project on Northwestern Mutual downtown campus.
There's something very different though, because, nothing is being built yet, only taken apart.
"Breaking concrete, torch cutting steel, proper lifting techniques for steel and then proper disposal of it," explains the project manager, Pete Salamoun.
Northwestern Mutual plans to renovate Milwaukee's skyline, replacing the 20 story east office building with a new tower twice as high.
So far crews have made it down from 20 stories to five, and they hope to reach the ground floor later this summer.
Construction on the new tower, then, will begin with an expected completion date of 2017.
