Two teens shot, killed in apartment building after assault
UPDATE: There will be a vigil at the intersection of 27th and Vliet Streets from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Police are investigating a shooting that that killed two teenagers. Police say a maintenance man shot and killed the teens that were beating him with a baseball bat. Was it an act of self defense?
It happened inside an apartment building near 27th and Vliet. A relative of the shooting victim also has questions.
“We don’t know what has transpired to cause this, as of now. I don’t,” said Joseph Hearns.
He says the 19-year old man killed in this apartment building was his nephew’s son and the 17-year-old was the teen’s girlfriend.
“He has never done anything like this,” said Hearns. “This is not his character, it doesn’t sound like him.”
Police say the two teenagers allegedly got into an argument that led to a fight with a 39-year-old maintenance man who was beaten with a bat.
“The maintenance man produced a handgun, shooting the two,” said Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn.
Police have eyewitnesses but they’re also hoping video will give them a clear picture of what happened.
“We do know the maintenance did sustain injuries and we did capture the assault on him on video,” said Flynn. “The video also captures the shooting.”
Friends described the maintenance man as a good guy. He was taken to the hospital with head injuries but is expected to be okay.
As for Hearns, he returned to the scene for one reason. “Just to find out what happened.”
Police did take a third person involved in the argument into custody. It will be up to the DA’s office to sort through the video and witness accounts to see if any charges will be filed.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was also on the scene Wednesday night talking with police about the shooting.
