MILWAUKEE – A Milwaukee County employee who admitted to stealing money on the job may not face charges.

Following a December investigation, Damond Watts, 38, of Milwaukee, confessed to stealing approximately $1,000 from a county cash register over a period of time, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office sought misdemeanor charges of theft with the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office. Last week, Assistant District Attorney Michael Lonski did not issue a criminal charge and is recommending that it be handled as a Deferred Prosecution case, according to a release.

"A deferred prosecution normalizes criminal behavior and removes accountability," Sheriff David Clarke said. "This encourages other people in a similar position that it might be worth the risk."

Watts was employed with Milwaukee County since August 2012.
