Clinics rally to help victims of 'fake orthodontist'
WAUKESHA – Dental clinics are scrambling to help remove botched braces work from local children.
Those children, according to prosecutors, were victims of a woman who installed the braces from the living room of her Waukesha home.
Workers at the Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic called police when dentists discovered serious damage.
Children complained of pain. Parents claimed Aguilera offered cut-rate work, far less expensive than a professional orthodontist.
According to investigators, Aguilera does not have a license to practice dentistry.
"We feel there have are more people that have been treated by this person who claims to have a dental background," said Renee Ramirez, the clinic’s executive director.
Prosecutors are preparing charges against the woman after an undercover operation confirmed the claims. Meanwhile, the push is on for local orthodontists to reverse the damage.
Marquette University’s School of Dentistry is just one clinic stepping up to help. Doctors there removed braces from a young girl.
"These patients can get decay around these appliances. They can have gum disease issues. Their bite can go terribly wrong," explained Dr. Gerry Bradley, an orthodontist at the school.
There's also another issue to worry about.
While investigators build their case against Aguilera, local clinics are now fielding new patients, who claim the woman is still practicing from her home.
"A couple of patients who are students from another program may have appointments with her next week," Ramirez explained.
Police fielded the same information. Officers tell TODAY’S TMJ4 they warned Aguilera not to continue her work.
Right now, the focus is on finding her patients before it's too late.
"These patients can very quickly deteriorate. So, I think time is of the essence here that these patients should be seen,” Bradley said.
If you or someone you know is/was a patient of Noemi Aguilera, please seek help from a professional orthodontist and call the Waukesha Police Department.
