MILWAUKEE - With salt supplies running low and another 25,000 ton delivery slow to arrive, Milwaukee's Public Works Department said Friday it will turn to a mix of salt and sand to treat side streets.

Main arterial streets will continue to get the full salt treatment, but the city released a statement saying "some residential streets" will see a sand and salt mix during the next salting operation.

While salt works to melt snow and ice down to the pavement, sand floats on top of packed snow providing a bit of traction.

A relentless winter has stretched salt supplies across the Midwest.

Since Nov 11, 2013, DPW crews have spread roughly 62,000 tons of salt on City streets, bridges and sidewalks.
