BURLINGTON -- Detectives confirm a "significant" amount of money went missing from a school lunch account.

In a letter to parents, Burlington Area School District superintendent Peter Smet explains how accountants noticed  December deposits missing.

The money at stake comes from the pockets of students who buy lunches everyday, the letter adds. The missing cash does not involve any property tax or state aid funds.

Still, some parents we spoke so find the discovery unsettling.

"To know that something like this would be hitting our community makes me sad," laments Toni Piccolo, whose daughter attends Burlington High School.

The school ordered an audit of the food service fund; ARAMARK provides food service for the district.

Detectives identified one ARAMARK employee as a person of interest. The superintendent, in his letter, explains that employee has been reassigned until the investigation is completed.
