STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) -- A homicide trial is underway in Portage County for a man accused of recklessly causing the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son.

Twenty-eight-year-old Reymundo Perez is accused of shaking the child, Felix Villa-Martinez, and slamming him on the ground in October 2011. A criminal complaint says Perez was babysitting the child while his mother was at work. It says he called 911 when he couldn't wake the unconscious child. The boy died two days later at a Marshfield hospital.

Stevens Point Journal Media says both the defense and prosecution plan to call medical experts with varying explanations for the child's injuries, which included a severed spine and brain swelling.
