MILWAUKEE -- When the temperature drops, the troubles start.
State transportation staffers are watching problems pop up on their screens, as hundreds of issues for drivers have been reported during this deep freeze. Snowdrifts and sharp curves are the main culprits, as the moisture refreezes and can catch drivers off guard.
"With the black ice, it's hard to tell that there's a problem with the roadway, and people are travelling much faster than they should be," said Lindsay Schmidt with Wisconsin DOT.
Aside from the black ice, drivers are having to battle their own tires in this brutal cold. The frigid temperatures really reduce the pressure, leaving many flats--even shredded tires along the roadway.
