HALES CORNERS - A dangerous situation for firefighters who raced to the scene of a house fire in Hales Corners Thursday afternoon.

The home is located near 108th and Janesville Rd. Video shot by Chopper 4 shows thick billowing smoke streaming from the home.

Officials say firefighters had to make their way through the residence filled top to bottom with boxes and bags full of stuff.

Hales Corners Deputy Fire Chief Martin Freibergs told TODAY'S TMJ4 that made fighting the fire very dangerous.

"When we decided we couldn't make any progress on this house we decided to upgrade the call." Freibergs said.

That meant calling in a half dozen additional fire departments.

Freibergs said crews had to make their way through narrow passageways to get the flames put down. It took a couple of hours to get the fire put out.

Investigators are looking into what sparked the blaze. The elderly couple who lived at the home escaped. One of them was treated for minor burns.
