RACINE - “We had a building and grounds staff member working in the field house in Olympia Brown Elementary and found asbestos in the air handler,” Racine Unified School District spokeswoman Stacy Tapp explains as soon as the staff member found the asbestos, tests were done to make sure the air was safe.

“The gym had passed the air quality test, however we are still doing the abatement so the Field House is closed off and sealed off. Students and staff are not accessing that area of the building,” Tapp said.

She says they aren’t concerned kids may have been exposed.

“Because we got the results back showing the air quality had passed EPA standards, we don’t have that concern,” Tapp said.

Tapp says parents and staff were notified right away that asbestos had been found, and that the district was closing off the field house for the abatement project.

The Field House has been closed off since early April.  The project should be complete May 12th
