ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL – A police officer was shot during an incident that escalated into a hostage situation in a suburban Chicago townhome on Thursday night.

This all happened northwest of Arlington Heights Rd. and Palatine Rd.

The Arlington Heights police officer is a 20-year veteran with the department. The Arlington Heights police chief reports that the officer went into surgery before 11 o’clock Thursday night, and that his condition has stabilized.

The officer was responding to a call of a man with a gun, and was shot in the neck as he entered the residence. The suspect then barricaded himself in the townhome and held a woman hostage.

The standoff continued for several hours before a SWAT team stormed the home, and shot the suspect. The hostage was uninjured, but the Chicago Tribune reports police killed the suspect.

The police chief says the whole thing likely started as a domestic dispute.
