Appleton man hopes for 'In God We Trust' license plates in Wisconsin
APPLETON - An Appleton man is on a mission to bring "In God We Trust" license plates to Wisconsin.
Just this month, the state legislature passed a bill authorizing the specialty plate, but not everyone is in favor of it.
David Hinds has been working to bring the plates to Wisconsin since 2011.
"I had seen the option of 'In God We Trust' license plates in other states on travels, and then I feel the Holy Spirit led me in July of '11 to inquire about getting one in Wisconsin," Hinds said.
At the time, Hinds had no idea he would have to get the state legislature to pass a bill authorizing the specialty plate. But supporters like Representatives Dean Kaufert and Dave Murphy were happy to help.
"Even though a bill like an 'In God We Trust' license plate, which a lot of us would think would be a slam dunk type of thing, is not as easy as you think to get passed," said Rep. Murphy.
Now that the bill has passed, the plates are still facing some opposition -- specifically from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, which says the plates show a "government preference" to religion.
"Our position is that government officials are elected to represent all citizens, including those who do not believe in a monotheistic god, or any god," said Patrick Elliott with the foundation.
While Hinds says he respects all beliefs, he argues the plates are optional -- and can't wait for the day when his dream becomes a reality.
Hinds now needs help raising $9,000 to cover the state cost of producing the new plate. Once they're produced, money from the specialty plate sales will go to help Wisconsin veterans.
