Teachers and staff prepare for the worst in active shooter drills
GREENFIELD -- It's an interactive assignment, but not a fun one.
On Wednesday, the Greenfield Police Department and Greenfield Fire Department brought together hundreds of teachers, staff members and officials from both the Greenfield and Whitnall School Districts to present training and real-world scenarios to prepare for an active shooter.
"We hope that a mass casualty event never happens, but we want to be prepared to work with school officials and our first responder partners if a tragedy should occur," said Chief Brad Wentlandt of the Greenfield Police Department.
The programs today included training in trauma care, escape and combat techniques, and strategies for remaining calm in crisis situations.
A spokesman for Greenfield School District says schools will hold lockdown drills for students once classes resume.
