Stolen Fiberglass Dog Back Home

GRAFTON - The crisis is over. The "dognapped" fiberglass dog is back where he belongs at a street corner in downtown Grafton. But the mystery over who took him may never be solved.

The fiberglass dog is an art piece, one of ten dogs placed around Grafton to eventually be auctioned to benefit the Ozaukee Humane Society.

After being stolen this weekend, the dog was found by police on a secluded bike path north of Grafton. But who took him, and why? Some speculate someone must have gotten drunk and stolen him, considering it happened overnight on Sunday.

"I would say somebody probably woke up, and after their hangover was gone, said, "What in the world is this dog doing in the back of my pickup truck?" said Richard Erickson with the LaBudde Group. The LaBudde Group is heading up the artistic dog project, called "Art Bark".

Wherever the dog went, he seems to have had a tough couple of days. One of his eyes is missing, and he's got a few scrapes. But the artists, Erika and Joel Deutmeyer, should be able to fix him.

"We're just glad they were decent enough people to go ahead and drop it off where it could be found," said Erickson.

The missing dog saga was the talk of Grafton for the last two days. Now that he's back, he'll be on display for a few weeks before going up for auction. Some guess the stolen dog may fetch a higher price now that he's famous.
