Brew City Flood: FEMA Visits Shorewood

  • Print

SHOREWOOD - Is help on the way for victims of the Brew City Flood?

FEMA teams have arrived to see if Milwaukee County qualifies as a federal disaster area.

Then it will be up to the government to determine if federal funds will be sent here.

Shorewood homeowner Yelena Biller was happy to see FEMA officials asking questions. But she's not happy about the stinky sewer water that backed up in her new basement.

"We do pay high taxes. This is unacceptable, this is unacceptable that nobody could take care of this," explained Biller.

She's not alone. F.E.M.A. visited many basements that need to be gutted.

"Expectations have to be realistic," cautioned Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker.

Walker hopes federal funds will flow to those who need it but he says F.E.M.A. is down playing expectations

"They're very specific on what does it take to get people back into their home not just what does it take to clean up."

This is an inconvenience, but we are not in Haiti in a tent, said Shorewood resident Adele Kaferly.

She has insurance for her flooded basement but she worries about those who don't have it.

"The people that have had their infrastructure compromised and have no coverage whatsoever. It's very, very sad."

Even if the Federal government declares Milwaukee County a disaster area, individual homeowners will still have to make a case for why they should get federal money.
