South Side Child Recovering after Struck By Head Start Bus
MILWAUKEE - Six-year-old William Cordero was recovering at Children's Hospital, in stable condition Tuesday morning after a bus struck him.
He was playing on Mitchell Street Monday afternoon when his soccer ball rolled into the street. Without hesitating, the little boy followed his ball right into the path of an oncoming Head Start bus.
"You need to hurry up," Rosa Torres recalled saying to a 911 operator. "He's underneath the bus."
The Head Start driver had been unable to stop before running over the small boy. The child was trapped beneath the big, red vehicle at 26th and Mitchell.
"It was too much for me to handle," Torres, a mother herself, said with tears in her eyes.
Little William was transported to Children's Hospital. His father later told TODAY'S TMJ4 he expected his boy to be OK. For their part, Milwaukee Police did not anticipate charging the driver of the Head Start bus.
"The driver definitely tried to brake in time," said Social Development Commission CEO Deborah Blanks. "She was trying to be very conscious of children on both sides of the street."
As the south side enjoyed an unseasonably warm March afternoon Monday, the streets were a sea of children, bicycles, skateboards and constant movement. That fact wasn't lost on Jorge' Silva, a close friend of the Cordero family.
"Children tend to love the heat," Silva said. "They're outside and they don't pay attention to cars. And, drivers should be more careful."
