Report: Unemployment Rose in January

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Unemployment in Wisconsin rose slightly in January to 8.7 percent.

State Department of Workforce Development figures show the unemployment rate was 1.6 percentage points higher than a year ago and 0.2 percentage points higher than December.

The state gained 5,600 jobs in January, mostly in manufacturing, health care and administrative services, but still finished the month with about 113,000 fewer jobs than a year ago.

The national unemployment rate for January was 9.7 percent, up from 7.7 percent a year ago.
