Fox Point Police Release Shootout VideoBy Heather Shannon with Jay SorgiFOX POINT - New video released by Fox Point police offer a glimpse of the moments at which 35-year-old Curtis Gerard died during a shootout with officers on February 15th. The shootout started as a 911 call for an armed robbery at the GameStop in Fox Point, made by a frightened employee. "He made the customers, all of us, get on the ground," you can hear the employee tell a 911 dispatcher. "He said he was going to shoot me in the back." Fox Point Police Officer John Adaimitis chased Gerard's car as he fled the scene. Video from inside the police car shows Gerard turning onto a dead end road in Glendale. That's where things turned violent. You can hear police tell the suspect to put his hands up. But Gerard doesn't listen. Instead, he fires at officers, who shoot back. "You don't have a lot of time to think about everything else. You've got to think about what's happening right in front of you. And what was happening in front of me is that somebody was shooting at us," Adaimitis said. Officer Adaimitis is married and the father of a 17-year-old son. Adaimitis says he's got a lot to live for, but in that split second as he was being shot at, he didn't know if he'd ever see his family again. "It's not a pleasant feeling knowing that if the guy were accurate one of us could have been killed at that time," he said. Both the Fox Point Police Department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney reviewed the case. Both ruled the officers were justified in shooting and shot in self defense. The officers received counseling and are back on patrol. Police believe Gerard was responsible for several armed robberies at GameStop stores all around southeastern Wisconsin. |
