Suspect Arrested after Milwaukee Firefighter Injured in Hit and Run

By Dan O'Donnell & Charles Benson

MILWAUKEE - Authorities have arrested the hit and run driver who sent a firefighter to the hospital. The suspect is a 37-year-old man from Pewaukee.

Police tracked the suspect's license plates to his Waukesha County residence. Waukesha County Sheriff's deputies took the suspect into custody Thursday night.

The injured fire fighter was hit Thursday afternoon at Holton and Keefe while helping two people involved in a traffic accident.

Linda Brazil was one of the people involved in the accident. "I heard them screaming at the man as he was coming through the barricade," said Brazil, and they were trying to stop him and he kept coming."

Brazil was sitting in her car that had just been reared ended when she saw another car come racing through the accident scene.

"I was glad I wasn't in his way," said Brazil, "because he was driving very fast."

Firefighters from Engine 18 were on the scene doing their jobs when one of them was hit by the black Mercedes.

"It put him right on the hood of the car," said Lieutenant Charles Stamschror. "He ran my fire fighter over."

Firefighters said the driver was in no mood to wait. He drove around the orange safety cones and right into the hot zone of the accident.

"When we stopped him and asked him to back up, he put it in gear and plowed into my driver," said Lt. Stamschror.

The injured fire fighter was treated and released from the hospital and is now wearing a leg brace.
