Lake Effect Snow Hits Racine
By Heather Shannon
RACINE-- They call it "lake effect snow", and it's definitely affecting people along the shores of Lake Michigan the most.
“You get a lot of wind gusts, changing direction," Racine resident Paul Nowak said.
Paul has lived across the street from Lake Michigan for six years. He's been trying to figure out just how much snow he got, but he can't quite figure it out.
“Is it hard to measure because of all the wind?” reporter Heather Shannon asked Nowak.
“Yes, it is,” he replied, laughing.
Hard to measure, and even harder to clean up, because it just keeps on blowing and drifting.
“When I came home tonight it was drifted up against the garage door," Sandi Hempson said.
Sandi lives just down the street from Paul, so she's also battling Lake Michigan's gusts. Only she's doing it by hand, after her snowblower gave out.
“Tell us what it’s like living by the lake during a snowstorm," reporter Heather Shannon said.
"Fun, after you snow blow," Hempson said, laughing. "It can get pretty windy. You make a turn towards the lake and it will knock you over if it’s coming in real heavy.”
Depite that, Sandi and Paul both said the winds, the drifting, and the extra snow and work are all worth it.
“I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else," Paul said.
