Plows Working To Clear Milwaukee Roads
HALES CORNERS - Since Monday night, snowplow crews have been on freeways and roads to try and clear the steadily falling snow that is creating a potential of a 14" snowstorm across Southeastern Wisconsin.
Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jodi Becker rode along with one Milwaukee County plow driver, Gary, who was focusing his efforts on I-43/894 from Beloit to 27th Street and on the I-43 Rock Freeway from the Hale Interchange to the Waukesha County line.
"He's definitely got some work to do," said Becker.
"He's making a good effort. To see the quantity of snow these guys can throw from the lane off to the side, it's really amazing."
Jodi also saw how even Gary, with his heavy machinery on the roads, was still having trouble on the roads.
"For these plow guys, it's light enough where they're getting a good throw of it," explains Jodi. "They're getting it off the freeway as long as it can get through. If you don't cause them an accident, they can get through."
Often, it becomes challenging for plows to do their jobs if drivers move past them at a high rate of speed.
"Make sure you tell people to stay away from the plows, not to tailgate us and give us enough room," explains Jodi. "The only way you can get a clear roadway is if they do their jobs today."
City Crews Focusing On Snow, But Need Help Keeping Sidewalks Clean
The city of Milwaukee put 107 plow and salt trucks drivers out on the roads to work on city streets.
"We want to make sure (the main roads) stay open to meet the obligation to schools, businesses and so forth, so we've been concentrating to make sure the main roads are open so people can get through there," said the Milwaukee Department of Public Works' Cecelia Gilbert on TODAY'S TMJ4 HD's "Live at Daybreak."
She explained there will not be any garbage collection on Tuesday, and that people will have to clear sidewalks after the snowfall or they will receive a $25 fine.
