Wauwatosa: Snow Emergency, Roads Not "So Bad"

  • Print

WAUWATOSA - On the western side of Milwaukee County, drivers in the morning found the beginning of the snowstorm to be not a horrific driving experience, but the city is preparing for more snow to come with a snow emergency declared for the city.

The side roads? According to Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jodi Becker, that's was a whole different animal until crews could salt the roads.

"There are a couple inches of snow on the ground already," said Becker in an early morning report.

"Neighborhoods are still very slippery, and only a few of the side streets have been cleared, salted or touched in any way, shape or form."

Later in the morning, crews did reach many of the less-traveled roads, especially on the east side of the city.

Crews in Wauwatosa have taken good care of the main road in the city, and the combined efforts were enough to allow Wauwatosa schools to hold school Tuesday.

"Highway 100 doesn't seem so bad, so if you want to avoid the freeway, Highway 100 is a good (option) right now."

At about 6:00 a.m., Jodi faced an increase of snow.

"We had a jucy band come through and it really picked up, but it has backed off again."

But Highway 100 isn't perfect, according to Becker.

"The dicey areas are the turn lanes, the mid-points in the bigger boulevards. You can stop OK, but getting going again, that's where you spin your tires. The flakes are blowing, but visibility has not been an issue."

Becker said that the snow is very light and fluffy, and as traffic increases, drivers will help melt that snow by driving over it.

She also explained that there were snowy patches which caused people to, as she put it, put the brakes on and "hope."
