MEQUON - Hours before the first flake fell Monday night, the aisles of the Sendiks here were filled with shoppers.  With a snow day looming, parents know a stocked kitchen is critical.  But, that’s only half the battle.  Cindy Gruber says an itinerary is every bit as important.

 

“Video games, reading a book, having a friend over to play,” she said mapping out the day her 5-year-old was likely to enjoy.

 

But Carol Hardwick, whose daughter is a high school senior, is more likely to go with the flow, or snow.

 

“I think sometimes you need to enjoy them (snow days) once in awhile,” Carol said as her eyes crinkled and she giggled.  “They don’t come very often.  Part of it is just the glee of being able to wake her up and say ‘you don’t have to get up.’”

 

That statement may have allowed Carol to stake her claim to the title of “coolest mom ever.”  Gail Eder also sees the value in flexibility.

“I improvise every day,” she said smiling.  “So, I never have a plan.”

 

On a snow day, groceries are important, but so is entertainment.  The Blockbuster video store on Port Washington Road here saw a steady flow of parents and kids seeking entertainment for the coming snow day.

 

Vytene Urbonaite walked up and down the aisles with her mother trying to make a decision.

 

“Probably some comedies,” she said,  her voice trailing off into uncertainty.  “I don’t know, maybe some scary movies.  Actually, I don’t know yet.”

 

As of Monday night youngsters and parents were in agreement about one key point.  The waiting and not knowing are the hardest part about looming snow days.
