Milwaukee Prepares for Oncoming Snow Storm

By Mick Trevey

MILWAUKEE - It's been a while since road crews had to deal with a big storm today, but they're making sure the salt trucks and snow plows are ready to go, and know where to go.

The city of Milwaukee called a meeting Monday morning with the group they call the "snow team."

This includes the Director of Public Works for the city and other regional directors who run the public works yards and the different places in the city. There are also a handful of other public works staff members that are in there.

The whole point is to plan out how they are going to handle the predicted conditions for this storm.

They are talking about how to address the length of the storm to keep the roads, garbage pickups and other aspects of operations in the city of Milwaukee on track as the snow falls.

Also this morning, the Milwaukee County Transit System is preparing for the snow.

They say a long-term snowstorm that falls over many hours could help them.

"If it's drawn out and they can keep up with the roads, if the roads are plowed, it's going to be easier for the buses to get through," said Jackie Janz of the Milwaukee County Transit System. "We'll just have to wait and see what happens."

TODAY'S TMJ4 visited a garage where city employees repair and maintain equipment like snow plows.  Manager Jim Strehlow said, “we’re in really good shape because we haven’t had a big snowfall recently. So we have everything ready.”
