South Side Restaurant Total Loss after Fire
MILWAUKEE- A small, south side restaurant was destroyed by a fire Wednesday morning. It happened just two weeks after a fire, believed to be arson, destroyed east side landmark Pizza Man and three other businesses.
Firefighters arrived at the Saigon Vietnamese & Chinese Restaurant at 21st and National just three minutes after getting the call. But the fire moved quickly, destroying both the restaurant and the apartment above it.
The two-alarm fire started on the first floor and was first reported around 9:30 a.m. Firefighters had the fire under control within 90 minutes, but the damage to the building was severe.
Ly Tran is a cook at Saigon who also lived upstairs. Her English is limited, but she described watching both her place of employment and her apartment burn to the ground.
"It scared me a lot. I just see the smoke, I don't see the fire. So I smell smoke, and the smoke come out," Tran said.
"Everything gone now. I see all my clothes, everything, all my stuff upstairs," she added.
Firefighters say one resident was inside the building when the fire started, and he called 911. No one was injured, but the fire certainly left victims in its wake.
TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Michael George asked Ly Tran what she would do now.
"I don't know. I don't do nothing. Now I have to wait," Tran said.
Red Cross workers were on the scene helping Ly Tran. The owner of the building says he does plan to rebuild. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
