Critics Question Candidate's Taxes
MADISON - He's made money as a successful real estate developer in the Madison area but it's what Terrence Wall is doing with his money that has his critics talking.
"All of us pay state taxes. We don't like to pay taxes but we do," said Mike Tate chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
According to www.wispolitics.com, Wall, who made more than $2 million in 2008, did not pay state income taxes in four of the last five years.
"There seems to be one set of rules for Terrence Wall and other set of rules for all of us. I owe state taxes, you owe state taxes, why doesn't Terrence Wall," Tate asked.
Wall's campaign would not talk to us on camera but campaign manager Ryan Murray says the Democrats are misrepresenting the facts a day before Wall is officially announcing his candidacy in New Berlin.
"Terrence Wall didn't pay anything because he didn't owe anything...and the idea that he is not paying taxes is just wrong," said Murray.
Murray claims tax incentives and charitable giving off set income taxes that Wall would have owed.
The Middleton businessman is trying to unseat incumbent U.S. Senator Russ Feingold, a real possibility with Democrats all across the country facing tough campaigns.
But Democrats believe there are still questions that Wall needs to answer concerning his taxes.
"I think it's curious," said Wall.
