Juneteenth Celebrations Turn Violent

By Vicky Hollowell

Click here to listen to Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Vicky Hollowell report on the second straight year of violence at Juneteenth Day celebrations.

Police were hoping for a peaceful celebration of Juneteenth, which is the celebration marking the end of slavery, but were instead called to the festival area to face a violent breakout.

Officers arrived on Milwaukee's north side in riot gear to deal with a crowd that had gotten out of control.

The festival itself was fairly uneventful, but afterward, participants smashed two cars, and put one of the drivers in the hospital.

Police even had to use their clubs against one woman who tried to hit an officer.

Some people think the violence takes away from the real meaning of Juneteenth.

"I think it should be continued," said Earnestine Rogers.  "It shouldn't be stopped because of some youngsters."

It's the second year in a row that violence has broken out at the celebration.
