Brother of Reetz's Stepdad Tried To Kill Family
GERMANTOWN - Charles Avey is facing first degree homicide charges for strangling his 14-year-old step-son Cody Reetz. TODAYS TMJ4 has learned, he was once connected to a notorious statewide manhunt.
In 1996, Timothy LePire shot his estranged wife and two of her family members. For a month, police searched for him, only to find him dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound. LePire is Charles Avey's half brother.
Krista Avey was married to Charles Avey at the time. She says it's eerie how history seems to be repeating itself. Their family was under armed guard while police searched for LePire. She never believed her husband would one day kill another family member.
"He just couldn't believe it, just like we can't believe what he's done," Avey told reporter Lauren Leamanczyk.
Avey has no record of domestic violence prior to this month's alleged beating of his wife. Avey told investigators he killed his wife's son, Cody Reetz, because she reported the attack to police.
However, family members claim, Avey has been prone to violence in the past, though it went unreported.
Krista Avey says her husband never hit her, but he had extreme mood swings and an explosive temper. She believes he suffers from depression.
"I'd beg for him to get help, hope he would get help," she said. "And he just thought he didn't need it."
