Random Lake Proud Of Amber Bahr

RANDOM LAKE - The close-knit community is proud of their hometown girl, Amber Bahr. The 19-year-old soldier took a bullet Thursday during a rampage at Fort Hood, Texas. But that didn't stop her from rendering first aid to other wounded soldiers.

Her act of heroism is just another reason people in this corner of Sheboygan County are proud of Amber.

"Tremendously proud." That's what bartender Steve Thome said as he served patrons at the Homestead Restaurant in the heart of Random Lake. "How horrible must it have been for her to go through that?"

"I think it's phenomenal," chimed in Diane Thome, Steve's wife, as she served a drink. "Anybody serving for the country should be commended for that, and I think she's very brave. I'm very proud."

That pride is well-founded. Amber used to work in the kitchen at the Homestead, busing tables and washing dishes. Beverly Hagel owns the popular eatery.

"She was an all-around good girl," Beverly recalled. "It's just amazing. It's really just fantastic. It's just really wonderful that she could do all of that."

That pride wasn't limited to those who work at the Homefront. Patrons too weighed in on the hometown hero now making national headlines.

"Tremendous person," said Bob Thiel when asked about Amber. "She must have been raised right," he added.
