Deputy Shoots Inmate at Waukesha Hospital

By Shelley Walcott

WAUKESHA - There were some scary moments at Waukesha Memorial Hospital when a sheriff's deputy shot an inmate he was escorting.

The shooting happened Friday on the hospital's fifth floor.

The sheriff's department says the inmate, Steven Lettenberger, 43, grabbed a knife and tried to stab the deputy.

That's when the deputy shot him. The deputy was not hurt, but the Lettenberger was taken into surgery and was in critical condition.

Saturday, Lettenberger was taken back in surgery to stop some internal bleeding.

Hospital president Ed Olson says things got back under control very quickly. "It was deemed not necessary to lock down the hospital. The situation was controlled and confined and I think handled very well without having to go to a lockdown situation."

And the hospital says no patients or visitors were ever in any danger.

One patient said, "They asked us just to stay in our room until they got everything under control and never at anytime felt threatened or anything like that. But it was very scary."

The deputy is 51-years-old, a 26-year veteran of the sheriff's department.

Lettenberger was in jail facing charges of bail jumping and carrying a concealed weapon.

The investigation into the shooting is being handled by the City of Waukesha Police Department.
