Hero Soldier Speaks To TODAYS TMJ4

By Lauren Leamanczyk

RANDOM LAKE - Amber Bahr is being hailed a hero both by her commanders and by the people in her hometown, Random Lake.

Bahr was shot in the back during Thursday's mass shooting at Fort Hood in Texas. Still, according to Lt. Gen. Robert Cone , she went to another wounded soldier's aid before ever realizing she was injured.

Lt. Gen Cone described Bahr as "an amazing young lady," on the Today Show.

Bahr spoke over the phone with TODAYS TMJ4 reporter Lauren Leamanczyk.  She was surprised by the national attention. "I just did the right thing," she said. "I did what a soldier is supposed to do."

Bahr says she is recovering well from the gunshot wound. Her mother, Lisa Pfund, was told Amber could be released from the hospital Friday night. Pfund plans to fly to Texas this weekend to be by her daughter's side.

On the phone she told her daughter how proud she is. "You went above and beyond, honey," Pfund said.

Bahr says the magnitude of what happened hadn't quite hit her yet. She asked people at home to think of those who did not survive the massacre.

"Just remember to keep everyone else here who got wounded and everyone who got killed, keep them in their prayers. Keep their families in your prayers," she said.

Bahr is 19-years-old and a 2008 graduate of Random Lake High School.
