Local Mother Has Son Serving At Fort Hood

By Jay Sorgi

RANDOM LAKE - The mother of a soldier from Random Lake who oversees soldiers at Fort Hood was relieved to find out he was not among the injured in the mass shootings there Thursday.

"Yes, I was," said Robin Geiser, whose 24-year-old son is an E-4. "I was very nervous, as was our family and all our friends and extended friends and family in Illinois.

"He called me before I could even barely find out he was going on. It came across the news so fast. Then the phone was ringing. I saw it was him and I said, 'phew.' "

However, her son has to deal with the emotions of having soldiers he oversees who were among the 30 injured by the gunman.

"He did know some of the soldiers that were injured. They were under his command, so he was pretty distraught and wanting to get back to see how they were doing."

She's especially thankful because he has a soon-to-be 5-year-old daughter whom, she says, he'll be taking to Disney World before his deployment to Afghanistan.

Robin is especially worried now about her son's role in the military after this shooting.

"I spoke to my brother-in-law who said the same thing. Who knew that I could worry about him on his home turf? I'd be terrified come January. I'm doubly worried now. You can't be safe here."
