Milwaukee Computerized Parking Meters Still on Daylight Saving Time

By Jay Sorgi

One of the City of Milwaukee's computers forgot to turn it's clock back, and that could cost you some money if you park downtown and don't pay attention.

Essentially, the computers that operate the city's computerized meters forgot to get that extra hour of sleep, so they're still on central daylight time instead of standard time.

Say you need to park downtown and you use one of the newer meters. You put your money or your card in and pay to park until 5:00 p.m.

The machine spits out a ticket that says you can park until 6:00 p.m.

Why?

"The meter still thinks we are in Daylight Saving Time, when we are not," said Milwaukee Department of Public Works spokesperson Cecelia Gilbert.

"It's a computer problem. The manufacturer is working with Microsoft."

But until the folks there get it solved, don't think you can park that extra hour beyond what you intended.

You still may get a ticket.

"We'll be monitoring the amount of time parked, so we just want to make sure that if you park in an area that has a two-hour parking limit, you don't stay there all day," said Gilbert.

But if for some reason you wrongfully get a ticket, the city can help you out.

"If you think you got a citation in error, we will be avoiding any tickets that were issued in error. We don't want to be inconveniencing any people, and therefore, we're asking people to call in that information, and we'll do it over the telephone."

The number is 414-344-0840. Explain how much you paid, whether you paid in coin or by credit card. The city will verify that info and take care of you appropriately.
