Tommy Thompson's Brother Runs for State Senate

TOMAH, Wis. (AP) -- Former Gov. Tommy Thompson's little brother said he will run for the 31st District state Senate seat.

Ed Thompson, who is currently Tomah's mayor, cited concerns about government growth, high taxes and a poor job climate as his reasons for running in 2010. Alma Democrat Kathleen Vinehout holds the seat.

Ed Thompson served from 2000-02 as Tomah mayor before mounting an unsuccessful campaign for governor in 2002 as a Libertarian against Gov. Jim Doyle and then-governor Scott McCallum.

He then recaptured the mayor post in April 2008 by nearly a 2-to-1 margin over the incumbent.

Thompson said he has thought about running for the state Legislature for several years.

While declaring as a Republican, Thompson said he would make independent decisions.
