Swine Flu Vaccines Run Out Fast

By Michael George

WEST BEND - More than 1,600 swine flu vaccines were given out at a health clinic in West Bend on Wednesday. Health officials say more is on the way.

The vaccines were given out in both nasal spray and shot form. Getting the vaccine was easy for parents, but difficult for kids. Many were terrified of the mostly painless nasal sprays, and some parents had to literally drag their kids to get them to sit down for the vaccine.

But health experts say it's worth it. Children are near the top of the priority list to receive the vaccine.

"The younger kids are the ones that seem to be getting sick more than the older folks, we're not sure why," said Washington County Health Officer Linda Walter.

The 1,600 doses ran out after just over four hours at the Washington County clinic. The clinic was originally slated to run from noon until 7 p.m., but had to be cut short.

Bob and Bonnie Johanning were turned away, and told the next clinic won't take place for two weeks. "Very disappointed, yeah. Because the swine flu attacks my lungs, and that's the main problem," Johanning said.

Health experts are encouraging only at-risk people to get the vaccine. That includes kids, the elderly, sick adults, and people who work with an at-risk group. The Washington County Health Department has already ordered more of the vaccine.

Health officials are asking healthy adults to wait on getting the swine flu vaccine so at-risk groups can get access first.
