Flu Fighters Campaign Originates At Children's Hospital
WAUWATOSA - Children's Hospital has launched a unique influenza prevention campaign. Children's Flu Fighters targets parents, caregivers and children with a simple message: practice healthy, sanitary habits during this cold and flu season.
"What we try to do is really emphasize to the care providers to help teach, in fun ways, how to prevent the spread of infection," said Dr. Mike Gutzeit, the chief medical officer at Children's Hospital.
At The Nurturing Nook childcare center in Glendale, the Children's Flu Fighters kits seem to be resonating with the youngsters. Tuesday evening a group of four and five year olds were contentedly coloring pictures of Missy Clean, Captain Cough, Super Sneeze and R&R kid. They all washed their hands before the coloring session began.
"It's just part of their routine," said Therese Ciofani of The Nurturing Nook. "They are so used to washing their hands continually during the day that, if they can't get in there, they're missing something."
The cartoon characters featured in the Children's Flu Fighters campaign emphasize that message.
"We have the posters up throughout the center," Ciofani said as she sat with her young, crayon-wielding charges. "So, they are starting to ask questions of who they are and what they mean."
"Are these characters and these themes things that are going to appeal to your kids?" TODAY'S TMJ4 asked mother Beth Wagner.
"Well I think it's all about reinforcement," said Wagner. "Any way you can reinforce something and try to make it fun is good."
