Man Charged in Deadly Bay View Arson
MILWAUKEE - The District Attorney's office filed a felony murder charge Wednesday against a man from Shorewood, accused of deadly arson fire in Bay View.
Christopher Masarik faces 55 years in prison if convicted. The fire, on S. Wentworth Avenue, killed 33-year-old Michael Jansen.
According to the criminal complaint, Masarik told police it was a prank. Masarik explained that he had gone to Jansen's home to get gas. He knocked on the door and didn't think anyone was home. He also said he lit part of a cigarette pack and put it in the gas tank of a lawn mower.
A week later, he told a told a friend "I can't believe I killed Mike." Masarik then threatened to burn the friend's home if he told anyone.
Masarik was apparently fascinated with fire. The defendant told police he would light lighter fluid on his hands and got in trouble once for setting a grass fire in a cemetery when he was a boy.
Masarik also told police he spilled gas at the house. The defendant explained the victim had been harassing him and picking on him recently.
