State Restricts Trucks Through Zoo Interchange

By Jon Byman

It appears the ramps in the Zoo Interchange are no longer safe for some heavy trucks. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is putting weight restrictions on three ramps in the aging Interchange.

The state says the bridges on the affected ramps are deteriorating.  The DOT is stressing that they are safe for vehicles under the affected weight.

However, the following restrictions are now in place:
• Northbound I-894/US 45 through the interchange to north US 45 (60,000 pound limit/30 tons)
• Southbound US 45 to the eastbound I-94 connector ramp (70,000 pound limit/35 tons)
• Northbound I-894/US 45 to the westbound I-94 ramp (80,000 pound limit/40 tons)

The DOT has posted alternative routes for such trucks.

The state is now in the process of conducting more thorough tests on the affected bridges.
