52 people safely removed from ship stranded in ice
ANTARCTICA -- An international rescue effort has finally gotten underway off the coast of Antarctica Thursday morning.
An earlier attempt at the rescue was delayed.
74 crew members, passengers and scientists have been stranded on a ship stuck in thick ice. A helicopter from China lifted 12 people at a time off the Russian vessel. After that step, a ferry is taking them to an Australian ice breaker ship.
According to CNN, 52 people have been safely transported to the Australian ship.
The 22 remaining crew members will remain aboard the stranded ship until it is able to free itself from the ice.
